THE PENTATONIC SCALE - AMAZING GRACE
NOVEMBER 14, 2011
While watching the video below that was sent to me, my mind was filled with memories of those day of knocking on doors. Shortly after my personal Christ Encounter, I was filled with zeal and boldness. I was compelled to tell literally almost everyone I met about the Amazing Grace of God.
It was my senior year in high school, my life had been thoroughly changed by the power of the Holy Spirit and I became somewhat of a youth leader. I must admit I did not know what I was doing, I had no training and no one told me to do it. I just knew that everyone had to experience this love and power that had become so real to me. Other young people and adults started following me. We became the "real Jehovah Witness" as we called it in those day. We boldly went from door to door filled with enthusiasm and the Holy Spirit leading people to God and healing the sick.
The Spirit had led us to a Housing Project to knock on doors, pass out gospel tracks and share the love of Jesus. We met this Black lady with long, very thick, salt and pepper wild wavy hair. It was not styled in any fashion, it was just there. She excitedly invited us in, the house was dimly lit and I must admit she did look a bit scary to us. We told her what we were doing and wanted to know if she had accepted Jesus into her life. She told us she had long ago and asked us to have a seat.
We thought we were there to minister to her, but she ended up ministering to us. She wanted to share a song on her old upright piano, so the three of us gathered around to watch her play. This was the first time I had ever seen someone only play the Black Keys on the piano. As she began to increase the tempo and singing, we joined in and before long the atmosphere changed in the room. She jumped up from the piano and started speaking in tongues, singing in tongues to the beat and dancing across the floor. Then she would run back to the piano and play a few more black keys and continue dancing as her long wild hair was tossed about. As we clapped to the beat, it was contagious - we were all caught up and blasted by the Spirit for about 20 minutes; shouting, dancing and jerking uncontrollably.
We left Ms Teola's house vibrating and staggering down the street. We often went there to get refresh and drink of the new wine. She had the good stuff and knew how to serve it. This video clip of Wintley Phipps explaining the Pentatonic Scale (5-black keys on the piano) reminded me of Ms Teola. Wintley's history of the song "Amazing Grace" and the Pentatonic Scale gave me a greater appreciation for the song. (Plus, it triggered some awesome memories of priceless experiences).
At Carnegie Hall, gospel singer Wintley Phipps delivers perhaps the most powerful rendition of Amazing Grace ever recorded. He says, "A lot of people don't realize that just about all Negro spirituals are written on the black notes of the piano. Probably the most famous on this slave scale was written by John Newton, who used to be the captain of a slave ship, and many believe he heard this melody that sounds very much like a West African sorrow chant. And it has a haunting, haunting plaintive quality to it that reaches past your arrogance, past your pride, and it speaks to that part of you that's in bondage. And we feel it. We feel it. It's just one of the most amazing melodies in all of human history." After sharing the noteworthy history of the song, Mr. Phipps delivers a stirring performance that brings the audience to its feet!
